Analysing Haydar Haydar's Novel Named Haklu Ercuvân

This study seeks to critically examine Haklu Ercuvân, a novel by Syrian author Haydar Haydar, within the socio-cultural and literary context of contemporary Syrian society. Syrian literature has been built upon a rich cultural heritage and a profound historical accumulation, and it has made significant contributions to literary movements across the Arab world. Particularly in the second half of the twentieth century, political events, civil wars, and foreign interventions left a profound impact on the works of Syrian writers. These developments were frequently reflected in literary texts through themes such as social structure, identity crises, class conflicts in society, and political repression. In Syrian literature, the novel as a genre has gained prominence since the 1960s, particularly through its engagement with political themes. Haydar Haydar is one of the prominent Syrian writers who emerged during this period. In his novel Haklu Ercuvân, he skillfully addresses issues such as inequality, social injustice, state oppression, and the tensions between the individual and society, particularly in relation to the Palestinian experience. This thesis undertakes a comprehensive analysis of Haydar's novel, exploring the intricate relationship between Syrian society, literature, and politics. It investigates how the novel functions as a medium of social critique and how class dynamics and social conflicts are reflected through its characters. Haydar Haydar's novel holds a distinctive place in the Arab literary landscape due to its critical portrayal of the political regime in Palestine, its exploration of social problems, and its reflection of everyday life. Through the character of Nâfiz and his family, the novel presents an in-depth depiction of the oppression and violence perpetrated by the Israeli regime. This study also encompasses the developmental trajectory of the Syrian novel and examines the contributions of Haydar's Haklu Ercuvân to this process.
