Administrative structure and city officials of Metropolis in Hellenistic and Roman Empire Period

The administrative order of Metropolis Antique City built between Yeniköy and Özbey neighbourhood that belongs to the district Torbalı in Izmir and the officials that organized the order are discussed as the main subject of thesis study. Firstly, the government of Metropolis in Hellenistic Period has been studied in order to interpret the administrative structure of the city and understand the change of the structure at the historical process. Based on the information provided by the decipherable inscriptions found during the excavations that have been going on since 1989, The importance, authority and work of the demos and boule assemblies of the Metropolis during the Hellenistic Period were mentioned; except for these assemblies, other administrative intuitions and organizations were mentioned. Along with archaeological, epigraphic and numismatics sources, limited information obtained from ancient bibliography proved that Metropolis had a government in Hellenistic Period. However, with the effect of close relations with Rome, the administrative order of the city reached an advanced level in the period of Rome Empire. Especially on the account of written documents provided by epigraphic finds, the officials who played an important role in city management were identified; they were categorized under headings in terms of function and duties, changes that these officials had in different periods were identified. Along with the bureaucratic order which accelerated during the Roman Empire period and conception of leitourgia , the wealthy families of Metropolis served in long-term positions in important official positions in the important city during this period. In our thesis subject called ''Administrative Structure and City Officials of Metropolis in the Hellenistic and Roman Empire Period'', Metropolis region and its general history were researched. Romanisation in other words during the Romanisation process, changes in the administrative structure of the city that was brought under control of Roman Empire were identified and these changes were associated with reasons. Officials related to ''Governance'', ''Economy'', ''Education'' and ''Religion'' were discussed as the main headings of official positions in Metropolis during the Roman Empire period and they came under the headings related to the officials that were categorised.
