Determining the views of nurses regarding retirement

This study was conducted with the aim of determining the views of nurses on retirement using a qualitative design and by conducting in-depth interviews with participants. The research was structured according to the COREQ (consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research) checklist. The population of the research consists of nurses who have completed 25 years in four public hospitals, have the legal right to retire but have not yet done so. The snowball method was used in sample selection for the research. The number of participants was determined according to the 'data saturation' principle, which is valid in qualitative research. In this regard,27 nurses constituted the sample of the research. Data was collected through a semi-structured form and in face-to-face interviews. The draft questionnaire was prepared by reviewing the literature and edited with the opinions and suggestions of two expert academicians who have experience in qualitative data collection methods. The data was collected by the researcher by meeting the participants face-to-face between 01/03/2023 and 01/09/2023.Written and verbal consent was obtained from the participants to participate in the study and to record their voices. Furthermore, ethics committee approval numbered 2022/420 dated 20/10/2022 was obtained from Duzce University Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee Data was analysed using the computer-aided qualitative data analysis program MAXQDA 20.Four themes were created by examining thematic analysis. The four themes are; the meanings that nurses attribute to the concept of retirement, nurses' concerns about retirement, factors affecting nurses' retirement decisions and, expectations regarding the retirement process. The result is that, unlike other countries, nurses in our country want to retire at an early age of 40 due to reasons such as fatigue and working conditions, but they delay retirement due to financial resources.
