Investigation of the relationship between nursing student's knowledge about suicide and stigmatizing attitudes towards individuals who attempted suicidide

Objective: This descriptive cross-sectional study was contucted to examine the relationship between nursing student' s knowledge about suicide and stigmatizing attitudes towards individuals who attempted suicidde. Method: The study was conducted between November 2022 and May 2023. The sample of the study consisted of 230 nursing students. The data of the study were collected using the 'Descriptive Characteristics Form', 'Psychiatrist/Psychologist Support History and Suicide History Information Form', 'Suicide Knowledge Scale (SKS)', and 'Stigma Towards Suicide Sclae (STSS)'. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 26 package program. Prior to the study, ethical permission and institutional permission were obtained, and written informed consent was obtained from the participants. Results and conclusions: As the knowledge about suicide increases, the level of stigmatization towards suicide decreases. Variables such as age, family income level, and a history of suicide in the family were found to be related to SKS, while variables such as class, mother' s education level, and a history of suicide in the immediate environment were found to be related to STSS. The relationship between the other variables included in the study and SKS and STSS was not significant. Keywords: Suicide knowledge, attitudes towards suicide, nursing students
