Investigation of serum trimethylamine N-oxide levels in patients with hypothyroidia and hyperthroidia

Abstract (EN)

Thyroid diseases are one of the most common endocrinological diseases all over the world. Thyroid dysfunctions are chronic and common diseases that often require lifelong treatment. Thyroid diseases, which affect the entire metabolic rate and activity according to thyroid hormone levels, are the cause of serious morbidity and mortality, especially in the elderly. Plasma trimethylamine n-oxide (TMAO) level varies depending on the microbiota composition. Recent studies have shown that the microbiota and dysbiosis are important in diabetes mellitus, obesity, chronic kidney disease and metabolic diseases. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of thyroid hormones, which are in this group and are the main determinants of metabolism, on microbiota and the effect of microbiota on thyroid diseases. In our study, 50 hyperthyroid, 50 hypothyroid and 50 healthy control participants were included in order to determine the diagnostic or clinicopathological value of TMAO level in newly diagnosed patients who did not have any drug therapy. TMAO level was evaluated in the serum samples by separating the serum part of the blood samples. IBM SPSS Statistics Version 22.0 package program was used in the statistical analysis of the data. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age, gender, smoking and alcohol use. In terms of BMI, the hyperthyroid group was found to be lower than the hypothyroid group, and the hypothyroid group was found to be higher than the other groups. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of IL-10, IL-1beta, LPS levels. In terms of IL-6 levels, the hypothyroid group was found to be lower than the control group. TNF-alpha levels were higher in the hypothyroid group than the hyperthyroid group. In terms of TMAO levels, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism groups were found to be statistically significantly lower than the control group. As a result, the low TMAO levels in both patient groups may be due to the effect of thyroid diseases on intestinal motility or nutritional habits. We think that new multicenter studies with a large population are needed to determine this.
