Evaluation of the auditory brainstem response findings in hyperthyroid and hypothyroid disease

Abstract (EN)
Background and aim: The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism on auditory pathways by using audimetric and auditory brainstem response measures and to find out whether they are in the risk group for hearing loss.Methods: 25 newly diagnosed hyperthyroid patients and 25 newly diagnosed hypothyroid patients that attended Duzce University Medical Faculty Endocrinology Department were included into the study. Audiometric and ABR measures were performed to patients.Results: The hyperthyroid group had sensorineural hearing loss in the high frequencies when compared to the control group. But ABR results were not significantly different from the control group (p>0,05).The hypothyroid group had sensorineural hearing loss in the high frequencies when compared to the control group. When ABR results were compared between the control and hypothyroid group I, III, V wave latancies and I-III, I-V interpeak latancies were reported higher in the hypothyroid group. I wave latancy, III-V and I-V interpeak latancies were not significantly different from the control group (p>0,05). However, III., V. wave latancies and I-III interpeak latency were significantly different from the control group (p<0,05).
