Human rights violations and the failure of the democratic transition in Myanmar

This thesis examines the practices of human rights violations in terms of democratic transition in Myanmar. This study argues that the democratic transition of Myanmar is ruptured through the violations of human rights, with the oppression over the opposition and ethnicity politics, predominantly occurred after the military has seized the power as coups (d'état) two times in 1962 and on the 1st February 2021. The coup ends up with a civil war, the rejection of the democratic election results, and disclaiming of the minority's rights. The study problematizes the challenges Myanmar encounter in democratic transition evident by the human rights violations, in the case of Rohingya Muslims. Rohingya Muslims are remained stateless according to 1982 citizenship law and Rohingyas were not recognized as a minority in Myanmar. These facts make Rohingya pretty fragile to human violations. The research employs qualitative research design in a descriptive way and aims at mapping the violation of the human rights and practices minorities rights in Myanmar as the region witnesses an ongoing democratic transition in which dreadful challenges led to political uncertainty. Struggling political crises mainly show up as consecutive military coups, causing humanitarian crises with a lack of deliberation, which is a requirement of a democratic regime.
