The effect of rapid reading education on reading speed and levels of understanding of 10th grade students

The aim of this study is to bring up the effects of the education of rapid reading on 10 ? ? grade students? reading speed and ability of understanding. Forty tenth 10 ? ? grade students studying in three different classrooms of Biga Anatolian Teacher High School in the first term of 2011-2012 Academic Year constitute the studying group of this study. While the activities in secondary school curriculum are being put into practice to the control groups, rapid reading education has been given to the experiment group with the activities in the curriculum. Five weeks practice has been done with the experiment group.Research data have been collected throuh the test of reading comprehension and reading, speed the measurement test. Data collecting means were applied as pre-test before the experimental procedure and as final test after the experimental procedure. Analysis of the data collected was realised with the help of SPSS 15.0 packet programme. To designate the reading speed and the reading comprehension of the groups, whether there is a meaningful difference between the pre-test and the final test, the T-Test was given. To designate if there is a meaningful difference between the the reading speed the groups reached and the grade they reached for the reading comprehension, T-Test was given. In the interpretation of the results p= .05 meaningfulness level has been accepted. The result of the analysis has showed that rapid reading education has positive effects on the students? reading speeds and comprehension levels.KEY WORDSReading, reading dpeed, reading comprehension, rapid reading.
