The rhetorical analysis in Ibn ʿĀs̲h̲ūr's Tafsir Al-Tahrir Wa Al-Tanwir

Each book is written in accordance with the rules and subtleties of the language in which it is written and the rhetoric used in that language. While this is the case for people, it is unthinkable that the Qur'an, the word of Almighty Allah, does not have these virtues. Therefore, in order to fully understand and explain the Qur'an, it is very important to interpret it within the framework of rhetoric. Works such as al-Vucuh ve'n-Nezair, Garibu'l-Qur'an and Meʿani'l-Quran, which were written in the early period and have survived to the present day, also show that tafsir activities dealing with linguistics and language arts have an important place. Such interpretation activities have continued throughout the history of Islam. One of the names who made this kind of commentary in the 20th century is Muhammed Tahir Ibn ʿĀs̲h̲ūr (1879-1973). While making linguistic and rhetorical explanations in his tafsir et-Tahrir wa al-tanwir, Ibn ʿĀs̲h̲ūr systematically examined the subbranches of linguistics such as consumables, ishtikak, syntax and rhetoric. He wrote his commentary taking into account Arabic poetry, the rules of use of language, and the words of previous scholars and linguists. Therefore, the linguistic explanations of the commentator were not superficial and irregular, but within the framework of a certain method. In addition, he made a certain choice on controversial issues. He explained the reason for almost all of his preferences and also stated the reason for rejecting the opposite view. In this study, we aimed to examine Ibn ʿĀs̲h̲ūr's rhetorical tafsir method and to reveal the difference and contributions of his tafsir in terms of rhetoric science.
