Ibn Al-Habbâz's commentary method In "Tawjīh Al-Luma"

Ibn al-Habbâz was a prominent linguist of the 7th century AH. This thesis focuses on his commentary, Tawjīh al-Luma, which he wrote on the foundational grammar text al-Luma by Ibn Jinni. The goal of this study is to reveal the author's method of commentary and his approach to grammatical issues. The research analyzes the explanatory methods, forms of argumentation and interpretations of disagreements used by Ibn al-Habbâz in his commentary process. It was found that the author did not merely explain the text; he also resolved ambiguous points at the literal, conceptual, and theoretical levels, and used both rational and textual evidence to justify grammatical rules. His occasional disagreement with Ibn Jinni demonstrates his critical stance. In conclusion, Ibn al-Habbâz's commentary presents an original approach that addresses issues systematically, highlights the reasoning behind grammatical rules and treats the science of grammar as a dynamic field of thought. In this respect, Tawjīh al-Luma is a significant work in classical Arabic linguistics, representing both the tradition of commentary and allowing for critical interpretations.
