The mosques built by İbrahim Aydın Yüksel' in İstanbul

Mosques are important worship places for Muslim societies. This importance makes the "mosque" a concept that needs to be considered carefully. There is no instruction or rule on designing mosques except the "cleanliness" and "direction" in Qur?an and Hadiths. So, this flexibility leads to a very wide range mosque type and architecture. Different approaches have emerged throughout the history. The development process of contemporary Turkish architecture and the history of modern architecture, which has got influences on these approaches, have been examined at the beginning part of this thesis. In this study, named as "The mosques built by İbrahim Aydın Yüksel in İstanbul" the approaches have been discussed and given well-known examples. As the mosques built by İbrahim Aydın Yüksel are classical mosques, they serve good examples for traditional approach. İbrahim Aydın Yüksel can be called as a "Renaissance Man" because he has got wide interests and is expert in several areas with different kinds of skills. He is an architect, an artist, a calligrapher, and an academician who has got a PhD degree in History of Arts. These specialities make him an architect of extraordinary versatility.Five mosques by İbrahim Aydın Yüksel in İstanbul have been examined by the scope of his personal skills. The architect has built several traditional mosques and these mosques prove that a well studied traditional project still can give good results. Today, it is only possible to have qualified mosques with the precision of the architect.
