Abstract (EN)

Today, individuals spend a significant portion of their time indoors; this situation increasingly highlights the impacts of indoor air quality (IAQ) on human health. Contrary to popular belief, air pollution is not limited to outdoor contaminants; indoor environments also contain various pollutants that can lead to serious health problems. IAQ is a critical factor influencing individuals' overall quality of life and plays a particularly vital role in brain health. Research indicates that deterioration in indoor air quality can cause neurological issues such as decreased cognitive functions, memory problems, and mood disorders. The primary sources of indoor air pollution include carbon dioxide (CO₂), dust, and other particulate matter. These pollutants enter the body through the respiratory system and can, over time, negatively affect brain functions. For instance, poor air quality can impair focus and learning ability, thereby reducing cognitive performance; this poses a significant problem, especially for students and individuals working in enclosed environments. Various strategies are proposed for improving indoor air quality, such as natural ventilation, advanced air purification systems, and plant-based indoor arrangements. The implementation of these methods not only enhances physical air quality but also has positive effects on mental and neurological health. This thesis aims to deeply investigate the direct and indirect connections between IAQ and brain health. Within the scope of this research, electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance (MR) images of healthy individuals without any pathological findings will be analyzed to assess the potential effects of indoor air pollution on brain functions and structural integrity. The materials and methods employed have been meticulously determined to ensure the sensitivity and reliability of the data obtained from participants. The findings from this study are expected to contribute uniquely to the existing literature by enhancing the understanding of IAQ's role in both brain functions and potential structural changes, and to raise public awareness about indoor air quality for brain health. In conclusion, this study aims to enhance societal awareness by contributing to a better understanding of the complex relationship between indoor air quality and brain health. Clean air is a fundamental element for a healthy mind and overall well-being; in this context, the measures taken will positively impact the general health of individuals and communities. The scientific data obtained from this thesis will serve as a valuable reference resource regarding the critical importance of ensuring healthy air quality in indoor environments.
