Determination of criteria in the elaboration of planing procedures addressing protection use equilibrium an example: Ihlara (Cappadocia) specially protected area and its close vicinity

ABSTRACT Ph.D. THESIS DETERMINATION OF CRITERIA IN THE ELABORATION OF PLANING PROCEDURES ADDRESSING PROTECTION USE EQUILIBRIUM AN EXAMPLE : IHLARA (CAPPADOCIA) SPECIALLY PROTECTED AREA AND ITS CLOSE VICINITY Omer GULKAL DEPARTMENT OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE INSTITUTE AND APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Erdoğan GÜLTEKİN Year 1999, Pages 212 Jury : Prof. Dr. Erdoğan GÜLTEKİN Prof. Dr. Türker ALTAN Prof. Dr. Hayran ÇELEM Ihlara Valley, which takes part at 25 km Southeast and in the borders of the Aksaray Province and AT the interception of the points 34° 16' in latitude, 38° 15' in longitude, formed the focus of this study. The region which was declared as the specially protected area, occupies 58 km2. Geology, soil, climate, hydrology, plant and animal life generate the natural structure of the Ihlara Valley having great source of natural and cultural values, were researched in detail. The properties that form the cultural structure of the region such as historical and archaeologic values, agriculture, tourism and recreation potential were detailly examined. The inquiry has been applied over four target group consisting of experts, local people, native and foreigner visitors and request, tendency and requirements related to usage were determined. Since research has two different direction as protection and usage, existing region usage was tried to be determined in terms of protection and usage. The second inquiry study managing this aim has been applied over experts, public opinion and decision markers, protection-usage criteria were determined and recommendations related to subject were developed. As a result of this study, " protection weighted usage" was found to be more appropriate model for the region. II
