In the example of the Sancak newspaper dissident Ottoman press in abroad in the period of Abdulhamid II (1899-1909)

Abdülhamid II period is an important breaking point in terms of Ottoman and Turkish press history. In this period, while the domestic press continued its publishing activities under the control of the Sultan, it is seen that the Ittihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti was engaged in the press activities abroad. The press published by the Ittihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti in various countries and cities, especially in Geneva, Paris, London and Egypt, was generally published to oppose the Sultan and the government. The Sancak newspaper discussed in the study was published by Ahmed Saib between 1899-1909. In this newspaper, harsh criticisms were made against the sultan and the ruler on many issues, especially on political issues. The main purpose of the criticism made in the newspaper is to ensure the establishment of the constitutional administration. For this, efforts are made to get the support of the public. In the first part of the study, the characteristics of the opposition press and the general press during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II were examined. Then, information was given the opposition newspapers published abroad in this period. In the second part of the study, information was given about Ahmed Saib's life, works, his views on Turkish historiography, articles on Sancak newspaper, technical features, printing process and closing of the newspaper. In the third part, the articles and news in Sancak were categorized and then evaluated about these articles.
