Example of a history textbook taught in primary schools of the Second Constitutional Monarchy Period (Çocuklara Tarih-i Osmani)

In this study, the course book of "Çocuklara Tarih-i Osmani" of İhsan Şerif Saru that is put down on paper in 1915 (R. 1331) was examined and the history teaching in primary schools is discussed within this framework. In this direction, firstly, the coursebook of "Çocuklara Tarih-i Osmani" was latinized and the content examination was made. Then, a document analysis was made, using various sources. As a result of the analysis, the change of history teaching taught in primary schools in time was put forward. Depending on the changing curriculum during Second Constitutional Monarchy Period, changes was also made in coursebook. History course was affected from these changes as well. While up to this period defeats were not mentioned in history books, whith the Second Constitutional Monarchy Period, a more objective narration was provided. While Ottomanism was dominant in previous history coursebooks, it is seen that books were written with a national point of view in this period. The aim of this study is to examine the textbook "Çocuklara Tarih-i Osmani" written by İhsan Şerif Saru in 1915 and It is trying to make sense of how history teaching was wanted to be done in the Second Constitutional Monarchy Period. In our study, the history teaching in primary schools was analyzed firstly from the foundation of Ottoman Empire to Tanzimat Period and then in Tanzimat Period, Second Abdülhamid Period, and Second Constitutional Monarchy Period. Afterwards, the life and work of İhsan Şerif Saru, who is auther of the book we analyzed, were discussed. Later, the coursebook of "Çocuklara Tarih-i Osmani" was analyzed. We believe that, with this study we carried out, we have lighted the way for the coursebook of a period and feel joyful over bringing forward a history coursebook that was once taught.
