An assessment of using waste material for teaching two-dimentional design on the contribution to the development of students' artistic development

We need new teaching methods based on research other than the traditional teaching methods for realizing the objectives expected in the Visual Arts in schools that are affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. As it is known, there are three-dimensional artistic formatting activities as well as those with two-dimensional ones among the teaching areas which are planned to be thought in the curriculum of this course. Several projects have been developed for recycling of waste material in the recent years. Some artists create innovations in the artistic field with the designs that they do with waste materials transformed into artistic forms via recycling and they also seek to emphasize the repercussions of the consumerism to the public and the damages the wastes did to nature with waste materials. The main objective of this research is to identify the contributions of the designs to be done with using waste materials in Visual Arts in the seventh grade in a Secondary School to the students' artistic development and the nature of their study and to assess their effects on their achievement in and attitudes toward the course. The research utilizes pre-test and post-test control group pattern among the experimental patterns. The research population is the province of Şanlıurfa and research sample is the 54 students studying in Hacı Abdurrahman Özdemir secondary school. The research was conducted in 2017-2018 academic year. We have used Pre-test and Post-test to assess the Achievement in and Attitude towards the course and Student Opinions and Observation Forms as a data collection tools. We have observed that there is a favorable difference for the experimental group between the Post-test score averages applied to assess the students' attitude towards the course in the control group using traditional methods and experimental group using waste materials. Upon analyzing the achievement assessment scales which are applied to Experiment and Control groups, we observed that the achievement average of the Experiment Group is higher than that of Control Group. We have observed that the values especially in completing the study in a given period of time and willingness in applying have been considerably higher than the Control Group results. In conclusion, we have understood that we can contribute to the artistic developments of the students by teaching them two-dimensional designs by using waste materials through providing the appropriate environment and material and sufficient trainings to the visual art teachers.
