Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify the problems which bilingual children face while learning basic reading and writing with analysis method. In this study, the problems which children face in the preparation (readiness), sentence, word, syllable, voice and free reading stages of analysis method, were identified separately from each other. This study has been done trough interviewing teachers of first grade who work in low socio-economic level primary schools located in Adana, in the educational year of 1999-2000. Two kind of interviews were used in the study: One of them is main interview which was applied to four first grade teachers at the primary school which bilingual students attend and three first grade teachers in the primary school which Turkish mother tongue students attend. The other was supportive interviews. These interviews were applied to 50 first grade teachers working in the tow socio-economic level primary schools. 25 of them were working at schools which bilingual students attend and the other 25 teachers are working at schools Turkish mother tongue students attend. So, total of 57 teachers were included as the sample of the study.IV Data were collected through Teacher Interview Form and Student Identification Form which have been developed by the researcher in the light of the related literature and the specialists' views. Teacher Interview Forms used in the main interviews were developed for each term of analyses method separately. Teacher Interview Form which was used in the supportive interviews was devebped under the name of Teacher Interview Form For The All Terms" and included the all term of analyses method. In the analyses of quantitative data which were obtained from interviews, number, percentage calculations and chis quare (X2) were used. For the qualitative data which were obtained from interviews qualitative descriptive analyses was used. Teachers working at the school where bilingual students attend, indicated the difficulties which their students faced while learning basic reading and writing as that: low attention, pronunciation disorders, apathy to lesson, deficiency of materials, not understand from reading or listening anything, can't answer the question which asked him/her and can't express himself The teachers working at the school where Turkish mother tongue students attend, indicated mat, their students face this problems too but, mey cope with these problems in a short time. On the other hand, teachers who work at the schools bilingual students attend said that, although they spent a lot of time and effort to solve these problems, there were a lot of students in their class who couldn't solve these problems. Because of that, they indicated that, the stages of analyses method fasted IS - 20 days longer than stages that fast normally. Teachers indicated that the reasons of these problems as follows: Deficiency of materials, Turkish is a second language for them, families which not interesting with their children's education, crowded classes, haven't kindergarten educatk>n,....etc. Key Words : Basic reading and writing instruction, mother tongue, bilingual education, analysis method, interview.
