Özet (EN)

11 ABSTRACT İn this study, the traditional method and the method supported by pictures and short stories for teaching the idioms are aimed to be compared. Furthermore, learning the meanings of new idioms and comprehension of these meanings through frequent repeats are dwelt upon. For this aim two groups of students were formed randomly sampling to constitute Control Group and Experiment Group. The Control Group was given only the definitions of idioms. However the Experiment Group was firstly given the definition and this is followed by the presentation of the definition through the pictures emphasizing the definition and then original short stories that explain the real meaning of the idiom. Results from the first pre-test, given to determine students' knowledge of the idioms, did not reveal any significant difference between groups. However, results from the last past-test indicated significant differences between the Experiment Group and the Control Group in terms of succes. The Experiment Group were more successful, in terms of the number of definitions they have learned than the Control Group (p<.000). As a result, this study emphasizes that the method of teaching the meaning of idioms through pictures and short stories is more effective than the traditional idiom instruction.
