Analysing 4th grade students' critical thinking abilities and math success level

Özet (EN)

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between mathematics achievement and critical thinking skills of fourth grade students in terms of gender, school type, kindergarten attendance status and period, number of sibling, and parental education status. This research which is used a quantitative method is a survey model in this study. The participants of the study are 594-fourth grade students who are educated during 2016-2017 in 16 elementary schools in Şehitkamil district of Gaziantep province. The main data instruments of the study are 'Critical Thinking Scale' which is developed by Demir (2006), 'Mathematical Achievement Test' which is developed by reseacher and 'Personal Information Form'. In the analysis of the data, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t test, one way ANOVA and correlation were used. In this research, it is found that there is not a significant difference between critical thinking skills and gender, school type, kindergarten status, number of siblings, parental education status. However, mathematical success is found to be significantly different according to the type of school, number of siblings and educational status of parents. In addition, it has been determined that there is a significant positive but a low level of correlation between the 'Critical Thinking Skills' and 'Mathematics Achievement Test' scores.
