Opinion of the teachers on the role of social sciences course about creating earthquake consciousness

The purpose of this research is ?to illustrate the role of Social Sciences to create Earthquake Consciousness?. To achieve this main purpose these questions are tried to be answered:1)Is there a relationship between the sexes of the children and their opinions on therole of Social Sciences course to create earthquake consciousness?2)Is there a relationship between the teachers? years of experience and their opinionson the role of Social Sciences course to create earthquake consciousness?3)Is there a relationship between the colleges from which the teachers graduated andtheir opinions on the role of Social Sciences course to create earthquake consciousness?This research is performed among the 141 5th grade teachers in the primary schools located in central Elazığ in 2007-2008 educational year.According to the data achieved by the research, attendants stated that they find the teachers successful as they teach their students what is necessary to survive, what the relevant and irrelevant equipments are at the moment of the earthquake, what is to be done in emergency, how to operate the evacuation of the classes, what is to be done before, during and after the earthquake, how to operate evacuation of the building, what kind of dangers they can face during the evacuation and that the aftershocks should not be forgotten.Besides while finding the Social Sciences course book sufficient enough, the teachers find the student workbook and the guide book partly insufficient. It is observed that the teachers are of the opinion that the curriculum of the Social Sciences course and the activities included in the course are sufficient to achieve earthquake consciousness. Moreover it is also observed that the activities included in the Social Sciences course and the information given on the earthquake consciousness are suitable for the developmental features of the students.If it is needed to make a general evaluation, under the light of the information got after this study, on the aspect of the teachers? opinion Social Sciences course is successful to develop earthquake consciousness.
