Abstract (EN)
The main objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between the mathematical problem-solving ability at school and problem-solving skills in the daily lives of six-grade primary school students.The study was carried out in four different schools in three different districts of Ankara: Keçiören, Çankaya and Yenimahalle. Two of the schools were state-owned while the other two were private schools.In this study, a correlational model was considered appropriate since the research questions required collecting data from the sample group as to whether there was a statistically significant relationship between the two variables. To this end, the students were given a mathematics test and a problem-solving inventory, and then a statistical analysis was run to see whether a significant relationship existed between the two. These research tools were administered to 209 primary school second stage students.The problem of the study is defined as:Problem: is there a meaningful relationship between the scores of the six-grade primary school students at problem solving inventory and their performance at mathatical problem solving ?The data collected through the inventory and the test were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package program. A T-test was run to see whether the achievement level differed among the schools mentioned before and whether there was a significant relationship between the mathematics test scores and the results of the problem-solving inventory.The results of the statistical analysis have indicated that state-owned schools were better both in math scores and problem-solving skills in real life. The results also point out to the fact that there is a highly significant correlation between mathematics test scores and the problem-solving inventory.
