Teacher opinions related to the level of achieving general aims of social studies curriculum for 6th grades at primary education: A sample of Elazığ province

This survey is made to define the techer opinions about the level of achieving general aims of Social studies Curriculum for 6th grades at primary education and to determine if these opinions show differences fort he techers? genders, level of education and the period of working. İn this survey a Likert 5 form questionnarie is developped by the researcher for collecting data. As a result of statistics and expert opinions, it is found out that the scale is valid and reliable.The surveys universe is formed by teachers who work primary school in Elazığ, and the sample is formed by 69 Social Studies teachers work in these schools.The findings of survey are reviewed in seven dimensions. Standart deviation and avarege are taken one by on efor each dimension. By the help of t test and variance analysis, for each dimension, it is reviewed if there is a meaningful difference among the groups.As a result of the survey, the teachers find Social Studies coursebooks and workbooks adequate for achieving the general aims of Social studies Curriculum. General aims are found adeqquate fort he needs of student and society. But inadequate lesson hour is seen as a handicap for achieving general aims .Social Studies teachers care about democratic teaching atmosphere and students? right for telling their ideas freely. İt is determined that there are some insufficient points about the analyzing skills iin the general aims of Social Studies Curriculum.Keywords: Social Studies, curriculum, general aims, course book
