Reserching 5th grade student's points of view about mathematics lesson by using mastery lerning model

The objective of this research is to bring out the relationship between the cognitive,perceptional conceptions of 5th grade elementary students and their points of view about thelearning strategies and achievement test results; and the variables such as school, the genderof the teacher and of the student, educational background and income level of the parents, the1st semester mathematics grade and the support they receive to be successful.This research has been carried out as a survey model with 362 5th grade elementaryschool students studying in Özel Sağlık Eğitim Vakfı lköğretim Okulu, Şehit Fazıl Beylköğretim Okulu, Misak-ı Milli lköğretim Okulu, Hakimiyet-i Milliye lköğretim Okulu,Mehmet Akif Ersoy lköğretim Okulu, Adnan Mazıcı lköğretim Okulu and Vasıf Çınarlköğretim Okulu in the district of Konak in zmir in the 2005-2006 academic year.The data for this research have collected with the cognitive, perceptional and learningstrategies scales of 25 topics whose alpha reliability coefficients are 0.93, 0.85 and 0.87respectively.Arithmetic average, standard deviation, percentiles, variance analysis, Schefe and LSDtests and t-test are used in the analysis of the data.According to the data collected in this research, there are meaningful differencesbetween 5th grade students? and their teachers? gender, education and income level of theirparents, grade average of the students in the 1st semester the support they received to besuccessful; the cognitive and perceptional conceptions about mathematics lesson and theirthoughts about the learning strategies and achievement test results.The private school students, with parents whose income level is relatively higher andthe students who has marked higher grades in mathematics are observed to be more successfuland the state school students are observed to have more positive conceptions relatively incomparison with to the private school students in all the scales. Besides, this research hasindicated that the gender of the teacher who gives the lesson is also important. It means themale teachers are more efficient and more successful than the females if we take account thegender of the teachers.Key words: Elementary school, Mathematics, Mastery learning
