Behavioral problems in children at primary education and effective variables

It is a well known fact that the child?s knowledge, skills and attitude, whichhe/she begins to acquire from family and environment as of his / her birth, maychange. Under the research carried out until now, it may be said that theseknowledge, skills and attitude are affected by different variables.The purpose of this paper is to give information about what variables affectthe behavioral problems encountered in the children at the age of primary education.With this purpose, a research was made into whether there is relation betweensome behavioral problems and age, sex, self-concept, the mother-father attitudes,levels of assertiveness.Sampling of this study consisted of 120 pupils thought to have behavioralproblems, their 240 parents and teachers at a primary school, which was consideredto represent low-medium socio-economical level in Bornova of İzmir during 2005-2006 academic year.Introductory information about the behavioral problems of the children wasgathered via ?Teacher Observation Form?. Family Evaluation Scale, ?Piers-HarrisChildren?s Self-Concept Scale? and Rathus Assertiveness Schedule were used toacquire information about the mother and father attitude, to evaluate the self-conceptand to find out the level of assertiveness of the children, respectively. The acquiredinformation was analysed through computer SPSS statistics program.Based on results of the research, it may be said that there are more than onevariables affecting the behaviour of the children with behavioral problems at the ageof primary education and these variables have an interaction among themselves.(P<0,05) It has been found out that the behavioral problems of the children are inrelation with family functions, self-concept scores and levels of assertiveness;moreover, there are statistically significant differences between ages.According to these results, it is clear that mother and father attitudes, self-concept scores and levels of assertiveness of the children play a great role inemergence and improvement of problem behaviour. Due to this fact, mothers, fathersand teachers should be more conscious in terms of creating a democraticenvironment for the children. Moreover, the society should be given moreinformation about this issue.
