The evaluation of the books which are used in the first stage of the elementary schools in terms of illustration

The studentbooks used in the education of the 1st step students of the primary schools in ourcountry have an important role on children?s love of school and education and their desire andinterest for lessons. Because, the studentbooks are the basic tools that will help the child ineffective learning, assimilation of what s/he has learned and for the leisure time activities. Inprimary schools, the books that are sent by the Ministery of National Education are used.These books have been tried to be developed in terms of inner and outer physical properties inthe light of the standarts that are determined by the Training Committee. However, thesebooks still have very important shortcomings about the outer physical properties, the mostimportant of which are the illustrations, and these shortcomings badly affect the quality ofeducation.The aim of this research is to determine the outer properties of books that are used at the firststep of primary school and among these, to determine the faults and insufficiencies of theillustrations.The research has been carried out with the datas got from the opinions of experts and byincluding the points of wiews of 40 teachers working in the provinces of Bursa and Niğdeabout the 1st , 2nd and 3rd grade books sent by the Ministery of Education in 2004-2005education year and the books taught in the first three grades in Germany.The data of this research, in which scanning model are used, are got result of the visual studyof the books that are talked of and a survey applied to the experts and the teachers of first stepschools. There are 15 items and the opinions of teachers are determined in 10 items. With thissurvey, the opinions of teachers about the effects of the visuals such as tine pictures andphotographs an education ang difficulties that teachers have in examplification of the giventext or knowledge and in the understanding of the subject.The second survey, in which the opinions of experts on the visual properties of the books havebeen taken, is the developed form of the survey which was first applied to the teachers. Thesurvey consists of two parts as the psysical and visual properties; the first part consists of 12questions designed to determine the physical properties of the book, and 15 items prepared todetermine the visual properties.With the help of this survey, to determine the visual state of books in Turkey and Germany isaimed and according to the survey results it is tried to put forward the visual insufficiencies inthe books in our country.
