The effect of leadership roles of primary school principals on organizational climate (a case study in Gaziantep)

The study was conducted in the districts of Şahinbey and Şehitkamilin Gaziantep in the academic year of 2004-2005. The sample consists of 719 teachers from 31primary schools in 13 areas. Data were gathered using a questionnaire which consists of threeparts: (1) demographic information, (2) questions on visionary, educational, cultural, andtransformational leadership roles of primary school principals and (3) questions onorganizational climate. The data were analyzed by using mean, standart deviation, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, LSD multiple comparison test and pearson moments productcorrelation. The study indicated that there was a positive, linear, high level and significantrelationship between four different leadership roles of principals and organizational climate.The results indicated that statistically there was no significant relationship between theperception of teachers about the leadership roles of principals and their gender, age, theschool they graduated from, occupational standing, duration in school, and duty. The studyalso indicated that although there was statistically no significant relationship between theteachers?perception of their schools?organizational climate and their gender, and dutyvariations. On the other hand, there was a significant relationship between (1) gender and thedimensions of interference and morale, (2) the school they graduated from and the dimensionsof dissolution and morale, (3) occupational standing and the dimensions of dissolution andinterference, (4) position in school and the dimensions of dissolution and aloofness ofprincipals. However, there was no significant relationship between these variables and theremaining dimensions of organizational climate such as intimacy, direct control, motivation,and consideration.Key words: Leadership role, Principal, Organizational climate, Teachers? perception.
