Abstract (EN)

In this study, the primary school 1st grade students' reading speed and reading compherension success in terms of various variables (gender, parents education levels, pre-school education, socio-economic level) are investigated. Additionally, reading compherension on success and reading speed are compared. The study was conducted with a survey design. The data were collected from 311 first graders from randomly selected five public elementary schools in Gaziantep during the 2014-2015 Academic year. In the research process, "Socio-economic level determining survey" "Reading comprehension achievement test" and "reading speed measurement test" are used as a data collection tool. The data is evaluated using the SPSS 20 statistical program, and reached the following findings: There is not significant difference in the primary school 1st grade students' reading speed and reading compherension success according to gender. According to parents education levels variable, significant differences are found in terms of the read speed and the succes of reading comprehension. According to take pre-school education shows significant differences in favor of pre-school education in terms of the read speed and the succes of reading comprehension. Reading speed and reading compherension success in the primary school 1st grade students have varied according to socio-economic level. When scores of socio-economic levels increases, students' reading comprehension and reading speed has increased. Intermediate, positive and statistically significant relationship is found between reading speed and reading comprehension in the primary school 1st grade students.
