An examination of teacher opinions on the development of primary school students' listening skills

The aim of the research is to determine the views of primary school teachers regarding the development of listening skills in primary school students. The research was designed in accordance with the qualitative research method. The study group of this research consists of primary school teachers working in Kocaeli province during the 2023-2024 academic year. Interviews were conducted with 20 primary school teachers working in public primary schools who met the criteria determined in line with the sub-objective of the research. Criterion sampling and convenience sampling methods, which are among the purposive sampling methods, were used to obtain qualitative data. A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher was used to collect the data. The data obtained from the interviews in this research were analyzed using the content analysis technique, taking into account the main and sub-objectives of the research. According to the results obtained from the research, it was found that the physical structure of the classroom plays a role in listening processes; that active participation is considered as students' effective listening behavior; that students see themselves as participants in the process of listening to their teachers; that they perceive their peers' behavior as a variable in the listening process; that students who have difficulty in listening display changes in their reactions; that teachers resort to various methods to ensure listening; that creating a good classroom environment is essential for providing a good listening environment; and that teachers consider themselves competent in creating a listening environment.
