Determining the factors affecting primary school students' acquisition of reading habits: A mixed method research

DETERMINING THE FACTORS AFFECTING PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' ACQUISITION OF READING HABITS: A MIXED METHOD RESEARCH The research, which aims to determine the factors that affect primary school students to acquire reading habits, was carried out according to the mixed method in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together. The research group of the findings of the quantitative part of the research consists of 742 students studying in the 3rd and 4th grades of 10 primary schools in Nilüfer, Osmangazi and Yıldırım districts of Bursa. Quantitative section data was collected through a questionnaire. Survey data were analyzed in SPSS program and given in tables as percentage and frequency. Qualitative data were collected with a total of 15 classroom teachers from 7 primary schools in Nilüfer, Osmangazi and Yıldırım districts of Bursa. The research data of the qualitative part were collected with teacher interview questions. The answers given by the teachers to the interview questions were analyzed with the descriptive analysis method. In the light of quantitative and qualitative findings, most of the students participating in the research have reading habits; Factors such as gender, grade level, number of siblings, and being literate of parents are not effective in students' acquiring reading habits, but it can be said that students have their own room, library, house, frequency of going to the library, having parents who read regularly, parents gifting books It was concluded that the practice of reading a book at home, reading a book by the teacher, having a reading time at school, chatting with friends about books, and reading books in the spare time of their peers are effective in gaining reading habits.
