An investigation of writing tendencies and readinghabits of primary school students in terms of variousvariabilities

As a social entity, people are constantly communicating with their surroundings in the world they live in. Through communication, people can easily overcome the challenges they face in life. We can easily convey our feelings and thoughts to our interlocutor through communication. Communication tools in our changing and developing world are increasing day by day. In the face of this change, it is necessary to educate individuals who can express themselves easily and communicate effectively. The foundation of communication is language. Through language, people transmit their feelings, thoughts and knowledge to generations. Using the language we can communicate verbally or in writing with the person we interact. Language education is very important here. People acquire reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through language education. These components are very important for effective communication. In this study, it was aimed to examine the writing tendency and the reading habits of the 4th grade primary school students in terms of various variables. The research population consists of 4th grade students studying in ten primary schools, four of which are centers and six of which are village schools in Gümüşhane, Kelkit district in the 2017-2018 academic year. The research was conducted on a total of 260 students. The questionnaires of 235 students in writing tendency scale and 235 students in attitude scale for reading habit, were included in the study. In order to gather data, Personal Information Form, Writing Tendency Scale, Attitude Scale For Reading Habit were used. The information obtained was analysed by independent sample t test, one way variance analysis and correlation. The level of significance in the analyzes were taken as p<05. As a result of the analyzes made, it was seen that there was no significant difference in the students' writing tendency according to age of starting school, gender of the teacher, mother education level, father education level. It was observed that student gender is in favor of female students; class size is in favor of more than 20 students in class; the number of words read in minutes is in favor of good and very good ones. It was determined that writing tendency is related to the success of the Turkish course and this relation is in the positive direction. It was determined that there was a significant difference in reading habits of students in favor of female gender for teachers, female gender for students, starting of studying at school in early ages for students, those who has his / her own rooms, those who has internet connection at home, those whose parents with high education level, those whose parents have a socio - economically better profession, those whose Turkish course success is high and those whose number of words of reading per minute is much in amount. It was determined that there was no significant difference in the variables of the place where the school located and studying older or younger brother / sister at school. It was seen that reading habits are related to the success of the Turkish course and that the relationship was in the positive direction. The results of the research were discussed in the light of the findings and suggestions were made about future studies. Key words: Reading habit, writing tendency, primary school students
