The importance of knowledge and its effect on the position of human beings in this world and the hereafter

Knowledge, frequently emphasized in the Qur'an and Hadith for its significance and virtue, constitutes one of the indispensable foundational elements of both individual and social life, enabling human beings to attain happiness in this world and the Hereafter. Knowledge is a means through which a person comes to know his Lord, comprehends the purpose of his creation, and directs his life in accordance with that purpose. While knowledge guides humanity toward enlightenment and guidance, ignorance leads to darkness and deviation. In this respect, scholars are individuals who illuminate the path for themselves and others through their knowledge, serve as exemplary figures by their conduct, and assume leadership in goodness and virtue, thereby gaining social prestige and respect. The Qur'an and Hadith praise those scholars who act upon their knowledge and share it for the benefit of others, while reproaching those who fail to practice what they know, conceal their knowledge, and thus deprive others of its benefits. This study aims to ground the nature of knowledge and its impact on the human condition—both worldly and otherworldly—within the framework of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. It also seeks to explore the etymological and semantic relationships between the concept of ʿilm (knowledge) and related terms such as ʿālim (scholar), ʿālam (world), taʿlīm (instruction), muʿallim (teacher), ḥilm (forbearance), fahm (understanding), fiqh (comprehension), maʿrifah (gnosis), jahālah (ignorance), and hawā (whim or desire). Utilizing qualitative data analysis and document review methods, the research investigates how the concept of knowledge is employed and conceptualized—drawing primarily upon the Qur'an, major hadith compilations, classical commentaries, lexicons, and contemporary literature on the subject. Within this framework, the study examines the influence of knowledge on human social status and prestige in worldly life, emphasizing its role in both material/economic development and the construction of moral-spiritual values. Furthermore, to determine the impact of knowledge on the Hereafter, the interrelation between knowledge and elements such as faith, religion, practice, and morality is discussed within the context of the Qur'an and Sunnah. The findings indicate a direct correlation between a society's level of development and its level of education. Societies that value education achieve advancement both materially and spiritually, whereas ignorant societies devoid of knowledge tend to experience economic stagnation alongside moral corruption and disintegration. Moreover, knowledge-based societies are characterized by continuous change and progress, with educational systems that evolve into more organized and systematic structures. In conclusion, knowledge attains true value only when integrated with faith, religion, practice, and morality. Therefore, scholars—heirs to the legacy of the prophets—are expected to be diligent in the transmission and teaching of knowledge, to possess an investigative rather than imitative faith, and to embody good character by translating their knowledge into action.
