Study of image, imagination and symbol in figurative and non-figurative art

Man is inclined towards perception and shaping of the world with the development of his senses. Image as reflection of the objective world to the conscious of human through sensation of senses is the first form of being in formed, theoretically, image during process of being informed have some similarities with formation of epistemology. Moreover, image which is a reflection of sensation to the conscious, is the basic quality of reflection theory. Imagination plays an active role in reanimation of image reflections. Considering important role of image in artistical activity and in being informed, both of these theories are studied with their self characteristical qualities and relation with image is defined more clearly. Before explaining image in art, visual image is stated thus artistical image can be more easily understood. First chapter of image and imagination deals with image in detail. The second chapter explains how an artist gives meaning to the image by his subjective inclination and symbol is thus being formed. Besides handling of symbol in artistic use, it is used in our daily life such as in organized life of the society, in playing an active role of science and technology in our life as well as perception ease of a new environment outside the nature occurring hear our environment. Noting this property of symbol various uses of symbol have been studied in small subtitles with their characteristic qualities. By giving examples of symbol in our daily lives, symbol that plays an active role in psychoanalysis is studied from different results of some outdoors and they are interpreted through our point of view. Furthermore, symbols are no more elements of expressions or forms of statement, but means of announcement. Starting from this point, when we discuss our topic we conclude that symbol and sign should be studied under different topics. Because sign gains meaning and shape through artist's subjective conduct. However symbol is filled with meaning by social contract and a new image (symbol) formed by itself and by reshaping is perceived by the society. New symbol carries a general meaning than a sign. For this reason we studied symbol individually. But it must be noted that although they have different meaning and functionalities, art history used both of them together. We do not neglect it only we deal it through our perspective. In this chapter, we also studied symbolic form concept as well as symbolism movement in historical process. Fourth chapter deals with sensation, sense abstraction imagination, formation acts that realizes image imagination sign and symbol by their own structures and their interactions through each other. Last chapter deals with image imagination and symbol in art. Pictures are selected both figurative and non-figurative through history to clarify understanding, they are intentionally taken from known artists to place the subjects into historical perspective. vn
