Abstract (EN)
In our group we have described how the absence of OmpA increases the sensitivity of K. pneumoniae against antimicrobial peptides. The data obtained in this work suggest that OmpA is involved in the activation of bacterial mechanisms, still to be determined, that alleviate cytotoxicity of the AMPs. More recently, we have described the contribution of OmpA in the attenuation of the immune response in host epithelial cells and its involvement in the survival of K. pneumoniae in the lung. Infections caused by this bacterium are asymptomatic and can colonize the intestinal tract, skin, nose and throat of healthy individuals. However, once a homeostatic imbalance occurs, K. pneumoniae can cause a wide variety of infections depending on the colonized site, leading to urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, bloodstream infections, liver abscess, meningitis, sepsis. Infection can be transmitted most often by direct or indirect contact between patients, individuals in the community, health professionals, contaminated objects, visitors, travelers. Transmission occurs mainly through hand contact. In the hospital, for example, there is a large flow of people circulating in this environment and consequently the occurrence of resistant bacteria is very high. The failure to wash hands by health professionals and visitors, for example, contributes to the spread of bacteria outside the hospital and the spread in different places.
