Abstract (EN)

Lovedale Missionary Institute, one of the most active foreign missionary organizations in the history of South Africa, was established in 1824 by the Glasgow Missionary Society as a mission station in the Eastern Cape. Since the Institute has been essentially established for the Christianization of the African people, the missionaries have carried out intense systematic works in the region. On the other hand, the Institute has also operated as an educational institution where academic and vocational training for Africans has been provided. Many Africans raised here have been influential in the religious and political history of South Africa. Among the missionary works of the Lovedale Missionary Institute, the Lovedale Press and its publications have a special place. Lovedale Press, which is one of the first printing houses in African continent, has been used as a tool both for advancing missionary activities and training the indigenous black people. It has also pioneered the publication of African literature by providing an environment for South African black writers to publish their work. In addition to hundreds of thousands of religious, academic and literary books published in the printing house, there is also a missionary newspaper called "The Christian Express" published between 1870-1922. In this study, the activities of the Christian missionaries in the Ottoman country and the religious, political, social, administrative and financial results of these activities are studied according to the news published in The Christian Express. Key Words: American Board, Missionary, Lovedale Missionary Institute, Ottoman Empire, The Christian Express
