The relationship between English language teaching methods, that english teachers use, and students' academic success

The aim of this study is to identify language teaching methods that English teachers use, to examine the use of language teaching methods with respect to their gender, lenght of service, university type that is graduated and to examine the relationship language teaching methods and students' academic success. Screening reserach is done in this research. The attends of the study were ninety-five (95) English teachers who study in 8th grades in Duzce. "Language Teaching Methods Measure", that was developed by researcher, was used to identify language teaching methods that English teachers use. Statistical package was benefited to analyze the data obtained from the attendants. The difference between language teaching methods and gender and university type that is graduated was analyzed through Mann-Whitney U test, the difference between language teaching methods and lenght of service and the difference between language teaching methods and students' academic success was analyzed through Kruskal-Wallis test, the relationship between language teaching methods and TEOG foreign language succes was analyzed through Spearman Brown. It was identified that the mostly preferred method was "Grammar Based Method" and the methods that were used the least were "Listening Based Method". There was meaningful difference between language teaching method and university type that is graduated, gender and lenght of service. As to the relationship between language teaching method and TEOG foreign language success, there were meaningful and positive side relationship. As to the difference between language teaching method and students' success, it was seen that sudents ,whose teachers used Active Teaching Method-Four Skill Based Method, were more succesful than students whose teachers used Grammar Based Method and Grammar Based Method- Four Skill Based Method.
