Arkeological di̇scoveries in Cyprus by the British in the 19th century

In this study, many sources, especially the Asar-ı Atika regulations issued by the Ottoman Empire, were examined. These sources primarily consisted of documents from Presidency Ottoman Archives such as the important correspondences from the Prime Ministry's A. MKT. MHM: fund, the Foreign Relations Documents under the ADV. DVE: fund, the Council of State documents under the MVL: fund, the Treasury Archives under the MF. MKT. fund, the Treasury Archives under the HH. d: fund the Ministry Foreign Affairs Correspondence Office under the HR. MKT: fund, the Foreign Affairs Decree documents under the İ...TAL. fund, among others. Apart from this, much research, studies, newspapers, articles and theses written by archaeologists such as Robert Hamilton Lang, Cesnola brothers, Richter, Myres, and Charles Newton, who were among the archaeologist who made archaeological discoveries in Cyprus in the 19th century, were used. Cyprus, one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean, has always maintained its importance throughout history. This geography comprised many civilizations and formed the ancient history of Cyprus. Information about who the first settlers of Cyprus were estimated that they settled on the island since the Neolithic Age B.C. II. The Hyksos invasions, which took place in the millennium BC and affected many regions, also affected Cyprus. However, it was saved from the Hyksos invasion with the intervention of Egypt. As a result, Cyprus was captured by Egypt and was constantly ruled by different civilizations. These civilizations were great civilizations such as the Hittite Empire, Phoenicia, Greek, Assyrian, Persian, Alexander the Great, Ptolemaic Kingdom and Roman Empire, respectively. After Cyprus was captured by Rome, it began to be administered from İstanbul. It has witnessed a continuous struggle for dominance between Muslims and Christians since 632. When the Ottoman Empire captured Egypt in 1517, it tried to capture Cyprus which was under Venetian rule at that time, due to its geo-strategic position in the region. However, he waited until 1570 for the appropriate period for conquest. After the island was conquered in the 19th century, an intense interest in antiquities began to emerge in the West. Cyprus received this attention and archaeological discoveries were carried out in the Cyprus by many Westerners, especially the British. The Ottoman Empire, on the other hand, issued asar-ı atika Regulations to prevent these activities taking place on its own territory.
