Abstract (EN)
Within the civilization accompanied by the global market, individuals are obligated to choose what is best and accurate for their health amid a diversity of services and products, and various environmental conditions. If these choices are made for an infant, where parents are entirely responsible for the child's life and care based on health preferences, a much more complex and intricate process emerges demanding heightened attention. This study investigates the challenge of mothers' decision-making about their babies under one-year-old across contradictory health information gathered from various sources. A grounded theory approach was adopted, employing the triangulation method for comprehensive exploration of the subject. Initially, 5723 messages from four Facebook groups were examined with the "doctor" keyword to unveil mothers' expressions and expectations related to healthcare professionals. Subsequently, to enable mothers to express their emotions in the moment, ten mothers with infants under 6 months old kept diaries for a period of six months. The diary-keeping procedure was supplemented with interviews conducted before and after the diary-keeping process. Furthermore, in-depth interviews were conducted with another 10 mothers in order to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and perceptions. The results were categorized to pursue mothers' decision-making processes. Finally, the research findings were discussed within the framework of topics such as the medicalization of health, health information-seeking behavior, user-friendly presentation, and reliability of online information. This analysis aimed to explore the communication landscape evolving around health information. In essence, the research has revealed a paradigm shift that portrays a new perspective of health and patient culture, driven by the efforts of mothers seeking health information online. The transformation of the patient-doctor relationship became evident as decision-makers assumed responsibility for health-related choices. From the perspective of the decision-maker, the consulted doctor ceased to be an absolute authority but rather emerged as just one among many sources of information, akin to various opinions available on the internet. This emerging culture is visualized through the My Eye Model to illustrate how individuals seeking health information shape, monitor, and make decisions through the Internet. This process underscores the absence of a singular truth in health, highlighting that perceptions of health information are contingent upon cultural, political, and individual factors. Therefore, it can be concluded that information ought to be transparent and accessible to the public, and also individuals should assert their civil rights and freedoms through their educational pursuits, inquisitive reading habits, and ongoing efforts to disseminate acquired knowledge in the realm of health advocacy. Indeed, a healthy environment and society contribute to the well-being of individuals, and a healthy individual, in turn, contributes to the health of the environment and society.
