Roman period pagan symbolised oil lamps in Ionia region

It is known that Ionia region is comprised of twelve cities. Every city has specific structure and different cults related god and goddesses. Ceramic antiques were found in the cities which all lived roman period. In the scope of this study sample oil lamps which were excavated in these cities, the relation of these samples with pagan religion and belief were examined.Firstly symbols like; god, goddess, plant, animal, geometric ornaments were defined, combined with the forms of oil lamps, and comparison with oil lamps that were dated and found in different geographies with pagan symbols were done. Effects of the pagan symbols on the interesting form specialties of oil lamps were observed while doing this comparison.As a result, symbols on the oil lamps which were dated roman period (early, middle and late) were parallelized to the sacred religions and beliefs and corresponded one-to-one to the pagan symbols.
