Abstract (EN)

In recent years immune activation and minimal inflamation of the intestinal wall has been revealed in the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (İBS) pathogenesis. In this study we aimed to determine the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri; a strong anti inflammatoric agent; on the serum visfatin and some other cytocine levels and functionel bowel diseases severity index (FBDSI).Thirty-six patients older than 18 years old were included in our study. After the informed consent blood samples were obtained properly and FBDSI were calculated. Study includes 22 healthy volunteers as control group. Visfatin levels of patient group were significantly higher than control group. Nuclear factor-?B and TNF-? levels were unsignificantly higher in the patient group. We randomized patients into two groups and administered convantional therapy (C) (Alverine cytrate+simethicone 3X1) to first group and convantional+L. reuteri (C+LBR) to the second group. After the therapy visfatin, NF-?B, TNF-?, FBDSI levels decreased in both groups but dominantly in C+LBR group. Decrease of FBDSI was evident in C+LBR group. Additionally body mass index (BMI) values decreased in C+LBR group significantly. Improvement of parameters were evident in C+LBR group, but this was not statistically significant. In conclusion, in contrast to general opinion, serum levels of inflammatoric cytokines and adipokines are higher in İBS patients. This reality may be important in the pathogenesis of İBS. Addition of tolerable probiotics to the convantional therapy may diminish the serum cytokine and adipokine levels and may cause healing the symptoms of the patients. Keywords: Irritable bowel syndrome, visfatin, NF-?B, TNF-?, Lactobacillusreuter
