Efficacy of tegaserod and trimebutin in the treatment of patients with irritable bowel syndrome

2.ABSTRACTEfficacy Of Tegaserod And Trimebutin In The Treatment Of Patients WithIrritable Bowel SyndromeINTRODUCTIONIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is often seen. The epidemiologic researches inwestern society, determine the rate as %20 in general populations and half of thepatients who apply to gastroenterology policlinic, have this syndrome. This syndrome isfrequently shown, for this reason it?s diagnosis approach, treatment and loosing ofworkforce are damage the economy.AIMPathophysiology of IBS is not clear and there isn?t any effective treatment.Trimebutin is one of the agent which is used for to regulate gastrointestinal motility withperipheral enchefalinergic regulation. It is known that the cures for serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine = 5-HT) receptors, which take role in pathogenesis of I S, are effective.BEffects of tageserod (which is partial agonists of 5-HT4 receptors) and trimebutin, inIBS treatment are compared.METHOD85 women are chosen among the women who are diagnosed according toRoma 2 criterion. And these women accept to follow the study and treatment. 200mgtrimebutin (n=43) three a day or 6mg tegaserod (n=42) two a day on an empty stomachget started. These patients are complaining about bloating (periodic or continual),abdominal pain and changing the habit of defecation (in general constipation). One ofthe patients give up the tageserod cure because of severe headache, and one of thepatients did not follow the cure. In the group of trimebutin three patients are give up thecure. In both group 40 patients comleted the cure. At the end of the forth and twelfthweek, patients are invited by phone to control and it was seen that frequency of basalIBS symptoms were less according to Rome II criteria.FINDINGSAll the patients were woman (n=80 ). Average age of trimebutin group is 45.6±13.5 ( 18-72). And average age of tega serod group is 43.3± 13.6 (19-72 ), (p>0.05).Frequencies of basal symptoms are similar in both groups. At the end of the forth weekboth two group gave the similar answers to cure. And there weren?t any meaningful3differences determined. At the end of the twelfth week, abdominal pain (%63) and hardbagpipe (%73) more high than the group of trimebutin (%32 - %48), (p in queue <0.01and <0.05). And complaining about constipation (%78) and bloating (%50) in tegaserodgroup higher than trimebutin group (%63-%35) but not much meaningful. ( For both>0.05).CONCLUSIONBoth tegaserod and trimebutin show the similar effect on constipation. Butespecially in long period, tegaserod is more effective than trimebutin for abdominal painand hard bagpipe symptom.Keywords: irritable bowel syndrome, tegaserod, trimebutin4
