The effect of the training video which was prepared with sign language on breast- self examination of women with hearing impairment

Object: The object of the study is to examine the effect of the video which was prepared with the sign language on breast-self-examination (BSE) skills of the hearing impaired women. Materials and Methods: The study is a quasi-experimental study. The universe of the study is consisted from the hearing impaired women registered to the Association for the Protection and Development of the Deaf in İzmir (N:80). BSE video contains sign language was prepared, then socio demographic features, BSE information Form and Champion's Health–Belief Model Scale (CHBMS) were used before the training, while BSE Skills Evaluation Form was used after the training. While the experimental group watched the video contains sign language, control group watched the video without sign language. Findings: Average age of the participants in experiment group is 61.7±9.5, and in control group is 50.0±13.2. The average disability status of the women in the experiment group is %64.1±10.6 and the average disability status of the women in the control group is %63.0±10.8. There is not any significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). Before the training it wasn't determined any significant difference between the total average scores between the three sub-dimensions of CHBMS of the women (p>0.05). After the training; it is found that there was a significant difference between the women in experiment group with the control group for performing the skills steps of BSE (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is found that, before the training non of the women neither heard nor performed the BSE. After the training, it is observed that women in the experiment group perform the most of the steps of skills in BSE; while the women in the control group perform in low rat.
