Investigation of the effect of cooperative learning method on academic achievement and attitude in science education-a meta-analysis study

The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of Cooperative Learning Method on academic achievement and attitude in science education by using meta-analysis method. From the experimental and control group studies, articles covering the years 2001 and 2018, master's and doctoral theses and studies in which the data were calculated using pre-post tests and at the same time the sample number was determined and the standard deviation data were calculated were determined as the inclusion criteria. In this way, 21 studies were reached for 41 attitudes for academic achievement, the data were calculated according to Hedges's g, then the effect values were determined using the fixed effects model for homogeneous ones and random effects model for heterogeneous ones. As a result of the research, the effect size of the effect of Cooperative Learning on academic achievement in science education was calculated as 1,300. This value is broad according to the classification scale. As a result of this result, it is reached that the method has a positive effect on academic achievement. It is seen that there is a significant difference according to the years in which the studies were published and the cooperative learning technique used, but there is no significant difference when examining the effects of the studies according to the field of science. As a result of the research, the effect size of the effect of Cooperative Learning on attitude in science education was calculated as 0.630. This value is moderate according to the classification scale. As a result of this result, it is reached that the method affects the attitude positively. It is seen that there is a significant difference according to the years in which the studies were published and the cooperative learning technique used, but there is no significant difference when examining the effects of the studies according to the field of science.
