Transformation of the mevlevi whirling in the context of islamic revival, multiple modernity and popular culture: The case study of Afyonkarahisar

In this study, transformation of the Mevlevi whirling has been tried to study in the context of Islamic Revival, Multiple Modernity and Popular Culture with a focus on the city of Afyonkarahisar. Mevleviyeh began to take shape in time Mevlana in 13th century and then time of his son, Sultan Walad, was created its decency and propriety by organized. This study which examined changes being in the extant of these applications based on an area research during nearly three years, observations and interviews contains.This study consists of three parts. In the first chapter was studied to be dealt with Mevlana's life, the historical development of Mevleviyeh; the Mevlevi whirling, its process of embodiment and types; the importance of music for Mevlevi dervish and Mevlevi rituals. The second section dealt with Turkey's modernization process and the contributions of Mevlevi dervishes to this process. In the third section, it was studied to examine the differences on the applications made by determining in the light of the first two chapters? information the situation in which the Mevlevi whirling come today.Mevlevi music and whirling have been left to be forgotten in many places with the closure of dervish lodges in 1925. But the Mevleviyeh?s post continued as a spiritual authority with the support of Mevlevi family and companies living Afyonkarahisar and whirling has earned the nature of a show being a religious dhikr over time. Although it is known the existence of people are still doing whirling in their homes as dhikr, it is a fact that has changed learning methods and the consciousness of making the whirling.
