Özet (EN)

Despite the critical role of Food Addiction (FA) in influencing patients' attitudes toward postoperative nutritional changes, research on this topic remains limited. Understanding the relationship between FA and nutritional attitudes is essential for making necessary adjustments and achieving long-term success after Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (MBS). This study aims to explore the prevalence of FA among patients with obesity preparing for MBS and examine how FA is associated with their attitudes toward postoperative nutrition. Data were collected from 177 MBS candidates with obesity (75 women and 102 men) who applied to the Metabolic Surgery Department at a Private Hospital in Istanbul. The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) was used to diagnose FA, and the Nutritional and Behavioral Attitude Scale (NBAS) was employed to assess patients' attitudes toward postoperative nutritional changes. The prevalence of FA among pre-bariatric surgery patients was 40.1%, with a significantly higher proportion of women (49.3%) diagnosed with FA compared to men (33.3%). The total NBAS score was 64.2 ± 10.7 and did not differ significantly between sexes; however, women scored higher on the "Operation-diet-exercise relationship" sub-factor (53.1 ± 20.7 vs. 45.9 ± 19.3 in men). FA was associated with lower scores in "short-term compliance with postoperative recommendations" and "operation-diet-exercise relationship," indicating greater resistance to nutritional and behavioral changes. FA was not related to current BMI. This study highlights a substantial prevalence of FA among MBS candidates and demonstrates that FA negatively impacts patients' readiness to adopt necessary nutritional and behavioral changes post-surgery.
