Abstract (EN)

This thesis comprehensively examines the painting programs of Franciscan churches in Istanbul. The primary aim of the study is to highlight the historical, religious, and artistic significance of these churches and provide a detailed analysis of the painting programs found within them. The beginning of the thesis covers the life of St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan Order, as well as the establishment, activities, and rules of the Franciscan community. It also discusses the presence of the Franciscans in Istanbul and their relations with the Ottoman Empire. Special attention is given to the privileges granted to the Franciscan community by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror and St. Francis's meeting with Sultan al-Malik. In this context, it is demonstrated that Franciscan churches hold not only religious but also cultural and artistic significance. The study particularly focuses on the St. Anthony and Santa Maria Draperis churches in Beyoğlu. The history, architectural features, and artistic elements of these churches are detailed, and the painting programs are analyzed in terms of iconography and iconology. The mosaics, sculptures, and frescoes in St. Anthony Church depict the teachings of the Franciscan community and scenes from the life of St. Francis. In contrast, the Santa Maria Draperis Church features rich artistic elements centered around the figure of Mary.
