A survey on risky behaviours of high school students in Esenyurt province of Istanbul

Abstract (EN)

In this research suggestions were made to determine the risky health behaviors of adolescents; protect their health, prevent them from harmful behaviors, for this; to give importance to raise healthy and conscious generations for the future.In state high schools and one private high school?s two different offices in Esenyurt province of Istanbul, the risky behaviors of high school students were searched and compared with each other.The survey was carried out 11 state schools and one private college?s Beylikdüzü and Esenkent offices of Esenyurt which lies on Europe side of Istanbul, develops and takes migration from Black Sea, Central Anatolia, Eastern and South eastern parts of Anatolia. The students were chosen randomly in 9, 10, 11 and 12th classes. The total number of students who participated in survey is 1356, datum were made by public survey method, analyzed on computer and in statically analysis X2 test was used.Survey field was constituted by 13718 students in 9, 10, 11, 12th classes of 11 state high schools and 547 students from a private high school in Esenyurt province of Istanbul. The total number of students who participated in survey is 14.265.?42.99% of state school student?s state that they use cigarette, 42.54% of them state that they use alcohol and 0.72% of them state they use drug. According to the survey made for state high school students, the reason of starting cigarette is to desire to imitate, reason of starting alcohol is to try and they use drugs because of its pleasure effect on them. In private school it id found that 33.20% of them try cigarette, 38.52% of them try alcohol and 2.46% of them try drug. It is revealed that they started cigarette from the other reasons most and they started alcohol by trying. In these habits, it is clarified that the use of these materials changes according to age and economical income. It is pointed out with the migration from rural to urban; state high school students begin to have risky behaviors because of economic, social and cultural reasons.When nourishment is the topic, 41.37% of state high school students express they eat 3 meals a day, 50.82% of private high school students express they eat 3 meals a day. 30.40% of state school students and 36.48% of high school students express that they sometimes eat fast food. 11.87% of state high school students say that they go on diet because of weight and 2.88% of them always take pills to lose weight. In private schools it is pointed out that 9.43% of them always go on a diet and 3.28% of them use pills to lose weight.It is found that the rate of private school students who go on diet and use pills to lose weight is much more than the rate of state school students.By using these findings, it is a must to say that families, schools, health organizations and civil society organizations have some basic duties. Written and visual media in our country must enlighten the society on the harms of alcohol, drug, healthy nutrition, healthy sexual relation, exercises and traffic rules. Families should educate their children on health before adolescence and in this way, it is a must to improve school health service and struggle altogether for adolescent health.Key words: Adolescent, risky health behaviors, altogether, written and visual media, civil society organization.
