The effect of urban problems on university students in İzmir:a case study Buca

The places where the geographical conditions are suitable and which have sufficient water supplies and a highly fertile soil had ensured people to gather around them. Meeting the fundamental needs of people who gathered around in a field through time had only been possible by the use of the natural resources around and division of labour (also, with the emergence of new occupations). The cities which came up in this way had collected the majority of the population in their structure with relation to the boom in the world population and other factors. In the cities, where the urbanization is fast and unplanned, existed some crucial insoluble problems, such as squattering, housing, transportation, security, immigration, environmental problems and other general urbanization problems. Izmir is a harbour city that was founded many years ago. It couldn?t develop systematically because of Greece invasion and demolition during the Independence war and for the financial problems until 1950s. Large number of people immigrated to Izmir after 1950s with the development of economic and social changes and this led to new housing problems as well as randomly scattered financial centers. For this reason, unplanned urbanization problems are still there and facing us in Izmir. The aim of this study is to find out the effects of this unplanned. New solutions are suggested according to the results that are obtained from this research. During this research, data from Turkish Institute of Statistics (TÜİK), Municipality of Izmir (İ.B.B), publications of Head of Izmir Environmental Affairs and other related publications were used. A survey was applied on 500 university students with the purpose of defining the effects of unplanned urbanization and survey outcomes were tabled and assessed with the help of Excel and SPSS 13.00
