The effects of vitamin K2 on fracture healing in rats; intact and exci̇sed periosteum

Objective: Although the number of studies on fracture healing has increased every day, the mechanism of fracture healing and factors that are not fully understood is still a matter of curiosity. Vitamin K2 enables calcium to be used in the bones by directing calcium to the bones and activating the ostecalcin protein. The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiological and histological effects of vitamin K2 on fracture healing in a rat femoral fracture model Materials and Methods: In this study, closed fracture (intact periosteum) and open (excised periosteum) model were formed on 48 male Wistar-Albino rats with an average weight of 2.5 months and a mean weight of 250 grams. After the operation, 48 rats were divided into three groups as control (group 1, n: 16), in which periosteal vitamin K2 was applied (group 2, n: 16) and periosteated vitamin K2 was applied (group 3, n: 16). The control group received no treatment, but group 2 and group 3 received vitamin K2 by gavage 30 mg / mL / kg 5 times a week. Lane and Sandhu's scoring was used for radiological evaluation and Hue et al. Results: There was no significant difference between the mean radiological values of group 1, group 2, group 3 on day 15 and 30 (p = 0.065, p = 0.099). The mean radiological values of Group 1 and Group 2 were not significantly different between 15th and 30th days (p = 0.088, p = 0.453). (p = 0.020). 30 days of all three groups-15. There was no significant difference between the mean% change radiological values on day (p = 0.383). The mean histopathological score of group 3 on the 15th day was significantly lower than that of group 2 (p = 0.021), but no significant difference was observed between the mean histopathological scores of the other groups (p> 0.05). There was no significant difference between the mean histopathological scores on the 30th day in all three groups (p = 0.592). The mean histopathological scores of group 1, group 2 and group 3 were significantly higher than the mean histopathological scores on the 30th day (p = 0.035, p = 0.026, p = 0.035). 30 days-15 in all three groups. Conclusions: Although the full union was achieved both radiologically and histopathologically at the end of the 30th day in all 3 groups, vitamin K2 had no positive or negative effect on fracture healing.
