The effect of escape room simulation on nurses' self-efficacy and satisfaction levels regarding safe blood transfusion

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of an escape room simulation on nurses' self-efficacy and satisfaction levels regarding safe blood transfusion. This study was conducted using a single-group experimental design with pretest–posttest measurements. The research was carried out between March 1 and March 31, 2025, with 30 nurses working in two different hospitals. All nurses who agreed to participate in the study were administered the "Descriptive Characteristics Form" and the "Safe Blood and Blood Products Transfusion Self-Efficacy Scale." Following this, the researcher provided theoretical training on safe blood transfusion, after which an escape room simulation was implemented. Each escape room simulation was conducted in three phases with teams consisting of three nurses: a prebriefing session, the escape room simulation activity, and a debriefing session. Subsequently, the nurses were administered the "Safe Blood and Blood Products Transfusion Self-Efficacy Scale" and the "Simulation Experience Satisfaction Scale." In the evaluation of the data, frequencies were used for categorical variables, and descriptive statistics were used for numerical variables. In addition, the Mann–Whitney U test, Wilcoxon analysis, and Spearman's rho correlation coefficient were applied. In this study, the nurses' mean self-efficacy score was 209.67±31.40 before the intervention and increased to 237.23±10.94 after the intervention; this increase was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The nurses' satisfaction level regarding the escape room simulation experience was determined to be 83.30±8.68. Furthermore, a moderate positive correlation was identified between the mean self-efficacy score related to blood transfusion and the mean satisfaction score (r=0.520). As nurses' self-efficacy scores regarding blood transfusion increased, their satisfaction levels were also found to increase. Based on the study findings, it is recommended to expand the implementation of educational interventions incorporating escape room simulations across different subject areas and to conduct experimental studies examining the sustainability of learning outcomes associated with these interventions.
