Kağizman regional carpets

The fact that the Turkish society living in the steppe processed a material (wool) seen in its daily life in order to meet the shelter and heating need of the Turkish society living in the steppe and turned it into a unique knotted weaving (carpet) is a method and a traditional cultural work that the Turks have brought to humanity. Carpets, which were discovered with the effects of steppe life, later became an integral part of the Turks. Carpets, which the Turks covered their tents, beds, saddles of their horses and even their bodies when they died, became the basic living material that the Turkish society took with them wherever they went. In this way, it reached the borders of Anatolia by being carried by Turkish migrations, and from here, with the conquest of Anatolia, it started to be produced and used in Anatolian lands. Turkish carpets, which came to Anatolia from the geography of Turkestan, did not remain here as they came, but continued their journey by showing developments. The locally specific features gained in every corner of Anatolia have further increased the value of Turkish carpets and enabled them to enter the palaces and houses in Europe and other parts of the world. With this study, Kağızman, which is one of the carpet production centres in Anatolia, is investigated with the speciality of "Kağızman Regional Carpets" by taking into account the development stages of Turkish carpet making over time. The research was conducted using qualitative research methods. The data obtained were collected through literature review, face-to-face interviews, observation and field research techniques. The research area covers Kağızman district centre and forty-eight villages connected to Kağızman. The artefact analyses were made by evaluating fifty carpets identified within these borders in terms of material, weaving technique, motifs and composition features. According to the results obtained from the study: By obtaining information about the motifs, composition and weaving methods of Kağızman carpets, about which there was no information and study before, it was prevented from being erased from social memory and disappearance, and it was ensured to be recorded. With these records, it will be ensured that Kağızman will be a prominent point in projects such as the atlas of weaving Turkish carpets that can be created in the future, thus the scope of the regions where Turkish carpets are woven and their existence can be expanded.
